The black population in the US grew at nearly three times the rate of the white population during the 1990s, according to a new analysis released by the Census Bureau on Monday.
While the total population rose by 13.2 per cent, the number of people identifying themselves as white increased by 5.9 per cent, while the number calling themselves black jumped by 15.6 per cent.
Neither the white population nor the black population grew as quickly as the Hispanic population, which leaped by 58 per cent during the 1990s, according to census data previously released. That jump made the Hispanic population almost as large as that of blacks.
Despite the fast growth of the black population over the past decade, whites still formed the numerical majority in 2000 in every state but Hawaii.
Nearly 217m people, or 77.1 per cent of the total population, reported being white or white plus some other race, while 36.4m people, or 12.9 per cent of the population, reported being black.
Last year's survey was the first to allow respondents to select more than one race when identifying themselves. The new analysis also broke race statistics down to the local and regional level, finding that the city with the largest populations of both whites and blacks was New York City, where there were 2.3m blacks and more than 3.8m whites.
Following New York, the cities with the highest black populations were Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and Houston. The largest metropolitan white populations after New York were Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.
The five states with the biggest white populations were California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania. New York, California, Texas, Florida and Georgia had the greatest number of black residents.
Of the people who said they were black, 54 per cent lived in the south, and 18 per cent lived in the north-east, and of 96 counties where blacks comprised at least 50 per cent of the population, 95 were in the south.
Most whites lived in the south and the Midwest, with 34 per cent in southern states and 25 per cent in the nation's centre. The region with the highest proportion of the total population reporting as white was the Midwest with 85 per cent.
