Car workers defiant in South Africa
South Africa's week-long car workers' strike is showing no sign of stopping,
despite threats from DaimlerChrysler that it could shift production back to
Germany in response to the stoppage.
More than 21,000 workers, the vast majority from the National Union of
Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), downed tools on 5 August over a pay
dispute.
Talks continue between NUMSA and employers, but the gap between the 7.5%
rise offered by management and the 12% the unions are asking for remains
unbridged.
And DaimlerChrysler's move - announced in an advert taken out in a local
newspaper - could polarise the situation.
