South African car worker's strike continues

Tuesday, 14 August, 2001, 16:29 GMT 17:29 UK Car workers defiant in South Africa South Africa's week-long car workers' strike is showing no sign of stopping, despite threats from DaimlerChrysler that it could shift production back to Germany in response to the stoppage. More than 21,000 workers, the vast majority from the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), downed tools on 5 August over a pay dispute. Talks continue between NUMSA and employers, but the gap between the 7.5% rise offered by management and the 12% the unions are asking for remains unbridged. And DaimlerChrysler's move - announced in an advert taken out in a local newspaper - could polarise the situation.
