Of course Stalin's expulsion of the Lovestonite faction was a central assertion of Moscow's authority over national Communist parties in the Third International. It is quite interesting to read the account of the face to face confrontation between Stalin and Lovestone that happened in 1929 in Moscow. See Hal Draper's _American Communism_.
