Well, yeah - but they were probably his own children, fa' pete's sake. To be fair, his chronic lack of funds had a lot to do with his inability to free more.

But keeping people in bondage while pissing away money on books, wine, and additions to your house doesn't look too good, either...

Fie on him. Give me Hamilton any day of the week.

Incidentally, I've been reading Beard's Economic Interpretation of the Constitution recently. I'd always heard he was some kind of Marxist muckraker - turns out he's a Hamilton-worshiping Connecticut Yankee! Interesting, to say the least...
