At its regular monthly meeting on August 27, the San Gabriel Valley Greens voted to disaffiliate from the group that has stolen the name of the Greens/Green Party USA, and to begin a new affiliation with the organization that represents the best traditions of its past and the hope of radical ecology and social justice in the future, the new Green Alliance.

The San Gabriel Valley Greens support the new Green Party of the United States in its Request for an Advisory Opinion from the FEC on the status of its National Committee. We strongly condemn the attempt by a minority of the minority of the G/GPUSA to block the FEC Request.

As reported, Nancy Oden, along with the newly appointed Jason Murphy, Maris Abelson, and Lisa Thurman, acting as the CC, after the resignation of Les Evenchick and the forced removal of John Stith, and claiming to act "for the Greens/Green Party USA National Committee, Governing Body of the "Green Party", Greens/Green Party USA," without, however, any consultation with the GNC, sent a letter Friday urging the FEC to reject the filing (AO 2001-13) of the Green Party of the US (USGP), formerly the ASGP. This can only be described as the coup within the coup.

The Boston Proposal, favored by a majority of G/GPUSA members, was a carefully negotiated compromise to create a single, national electoral party representing all Greens.

At the Carbondale, IL, National Congress, a minority opposed to the Boston Proposal seized power from the majority by stacking the credentials process. The elimination of dues waivers for low-income members deprived the SGV Greens of half their votes, a process that used right-wing ideology as a political weapon against a number of locals supporting the Boston Proposal. The credentials committee awarded two-thirds of California's vote to a miniscule band of five, who claimed to have formed a Caucus, in opposition to the votes of over a hundred California GPUSA members and the unanimous votes of every GPUSA-affiliated local in California that held a vote.

The stacking of the Credentials decisions was the first coup. The coup at Carbondale was advanced by well-known Fabian tactics of stalling, or waiting out the enemy, the pro-Boston majority, some 75% of the delegates. By the time of the vote, the majority in favor of ending the conflict within the Greens immediately held 55% of the vote, short of the two-thirds needed. Yet a proposal for renegotiation was eventually passed, with some favoring this as the only positive move left.

Now there has been a coup by the minority within the minority, by those who never believed their own rhetoric of "renegotiation," but only used it to deprive the pro-Boston tendency of reaching the two-thirds threshhold. Those who believed the lie of "renegotiation" have now been shown the reality. The rump CC led by Nancy Oden has acted in defiance of its own supporters who believed the propaganda of "genuine unity." It has lost any contact with its base, even hiding its maneuvers from the Green National Council.

The SGV Greens calls on all G/GPUSA affiliated locals in California and the nation to immediately disaffiliate with the group that has stolen its name, and to affiliate with the Green Alliance now in formation. A Green Alliance founding convention of affiliated individuals and locals will be held in the near future. To participate in planning, join the Green Alliance Listserve, GreenMovement at yahoogroups.com, by writing to dystopia@ wwnet.com.

If you believe that the opportunity to create a grassroots-controlled Green movement, opposed to the corporate destruction of the planet's ecology, is posed by the crisis within the radical wing of that movement, the time to act is now.
