(15:45) Ecevit: Sharon wants to 'be rid' of Arafat

Jerusalem Post

December, 07 2001

Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that Israel is heading toward war and that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told him he intends to be rid of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat.

Israel Radio reported that this was the substance of a telephone conversation between the two leaders this week. Ecevit did not elaborate on what Sharon meant by being "rid" of Arafat.

Ecevit stressed that, although Turkey is an ally of Israel's, it supports the creation of a Palestinian state and has proposed hosting peace talks between Sharon and Arafat.

Arafat adviser Nabil Abu Rudeineh told Agence France Presse in response to the report that any attempt to get rid of Arafat would be playing with fire.
