Nukes in the USA

Hello Dennis,

I've been following this thread with some interest, since the thought of a nuke in the hands of an organization like al-Qaeda is indeed terrifying.

But to my mind, the way to prevent that from happening is to do things like help Russia upgrade its security systems, especially its inventory procudures, at nuclear facilities. Bombing Afghanistan and getting at the al-Qaeda organization based there might help too, but there are so many things about it that are truly repulsive, and it isn't a long term solution anyway. Also making sure that people with knowledge of nuclear design techniques and those who have access to sensitive materials don't have an incentive to sell them to people like al-Qaeda who want to get their hands on them. Invading Iraq or Somalia isn't going to help much, either.

Why not worry about both? Why must we reduce everything to a single option?
