It would be easy to make fun of the many references, early on, to 9/11 as 
"the day when everything changed forever."  But in fact there have been 
basic changes that are likely to have long-lasting ill effects.  Above all, 
the US government and public are arguably now more militaristic than at any 
time in history, with the possible exception of WWII.
