Picasso's works travel to India for first time
NEW DELHI: The works of the 20th century artist Pablo Picasso would be displayed for the first time in India when an exhibition of his works begins here on December 14.
The exhibition, "Picasso: Metamorphoses 1900-1972", is the result of a cultural agreement reached between India and France in 1998 during the India visit of French President Jacques Chirac, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Jagmohan said here on Wednesday.
Curated by Marie-Laure Bernadac, Chief Curator, Museum Picasso, Paris and Saryu Doshi, Director, National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, the exhibition comprises 122 of the artist's works including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, graphics, engravings and collages.
French Ambassador Bernard de Montferrand termed the exhibition "a first milestone" in Indo-French cultural dialogue. As part of the bilateral agreement between the two nations an exhibition of Indian sculptures from the Gupta period will be taken to France in 2003 in accordance with the cultural agreement.
Jointly organised by the National Gallery of Modern Art, Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of France, the exhibition will remain in Delhi till January 31, 2002. It will then travel to Mumbai. ( PTI )
