It's a common Brit mistake. There's no rational pattern in how US universities are called. There's the University of Michigan (not Michigan U), the U of C (but not Chicago U), the University of Illinois (but not Illinois Univ), but there's Indiana University (not Univ. of Indiana), Ohio State University (not the Univ. of Ohio State, and Ohio University is another school altogether), etc. How's a poor foreigner to make sense of it all? Especially since there you can say, either way, Cambridge Univ. or Univ of Cambridge, etc., and be equally right.
