He was certainly getting money for it but it is by no means clear how much that played in his motivation. He continued to live modestly, and he gave away a large amounts of the money that he received to the Catholic Church and to Catholic charities including Mother Teresa. The weirdest aspect of this, is that he spent a large amounts of the money on strippers, apparently not to have sex with them or anything of that sort, but apparently to "reform" them and convert them to Catholicism. And apparently he was successful in at least one case.

It is also interesting to note that he had confessed his espionage activities to his priests, who advised him as penance to give the money to Catholic charities!
