No, he wasn't a simpleton, unlike many of today's Leninists. But he wrote Imperialism at a time when it looked like the German model of state-sponsored, bank-run cartels were the wave of the future. They weren't. Why use "monopoly" as a synonym for "big business"? There's a world of difference, which is obscured by the terminology.

CB: What an interesting idea ? Big business does not consist of monopolies; big business is a world away from monopoly. All businesses, large and small, have equal power in the marketplace. There's no difference in their "poly" , pull, political weight, power. The big businesses don't dominate the smaller ones.
