I think you have that backwards, Chuck. 1954 was when Congress added "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. That was also when "In God We Trust" was made our official motto, and when we finally made sure it was inscribed on all our coins and paper currency (and not just some of them). It was also when we posted similar phrases in all our federal courtrooms which are still there today.
It makes sense when you think about it. The 1950s were a boomtime for religion.
