Carowan Unmasked

I received off list e-mail from "Jan Carowan" asking me to forward a message attacking Doug as a protectionist in the pay of UNITE over the sweatshop piece. I replied to him that I would not do this, mostly because it violated my sense of how a list for political discussion should work, although I also thought the post itself was wrongheaded. I then received a number of more e-mails, the second to last one which was signed with Rakesh's name and the last one of which said "the cat is out of the bag." It found the whole thing completely strange, not the least because it did not fit my picture of Rakesh, who has always struck me as an intelligent poster. This is more the kind of bizarre behavior I would expect out of a Proyect. Ph.D. dissertations can do very strange things to people.

Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has, and it never will. If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters. -- Frederick Douglass --
