A problem of translation, no doubt. Brecht can still be enormous fun, but it takes a bit of digging to get at what Heiner Mueller called "der boese Brecht" (the evil Brecht, i.e. who had no truck with one-party states wherever they might be).

And then there's Mueller himself, who almost single-handedly innovated Eurotheater ("Hamletmachine", "Life of Gundling", "Germania Death in Berlin").
