U.K. Protestor Arrested for "Hate Crimes"

A protestor in the U.K. was arrested for dragging a U.S. flag along the ground during an anti-Star Wars protest.

According to a story in The Independent published 2/20/01, a U.K. protestor, Lindis Percy, has been charged with "racist hatred of the American people" for her actions during an anti-Star Wars protest at a U.S. military base. Ms. Percy, 59, allegedly dragged a U.S. flag along the ground during the protest, causing "'harassment, alarm and distress' to U.S. personnel driving out of the base." Apparently, under Britain's Crime and Disorder Act of 1998, "racist" speech or actions is punishable by law. This is the first time that the law has been applied towards anti-war protestors.
