Regional Socialist Conferences this Saturday

Dear friends at LBO-talk...

This Saturday, March 3, a series of regional socialist conferences will be taking place in Berkeley, Austin, Chicago and New York City. Each of the conferences will bring together hundreds of socialists and activists to talk about building a new resistance that can beat back Dubya's right-wing agenda and the priorities of corporate power around the globe.

The conferences are hosted by the International Socialist Organization; more details are available at internationalsocialist.org.

In New York City, conference speakers include:

-Robert Ford, Vice President of Local 1422, International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 1422 represents thousands of mostly Black dockers in South Carolina who recently waged a courageous strike. The local is now campaigning to free 5 workers jailed for blocking replacement workers on the picket line.

-Dennis Brutus, reknowned South African anti-apartheid activist and poet. Brutus is at the forefront of the struggle to cancel third world debt.

- Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! fighting Pacifica Radio's attack on public radio

-Dedrich Muhammed, civil rights activist and political coordinator of Al Sharpton's Nat'l Action Network

-SalAMI speaker, Canadian anti-globalization activists fighting the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas;

-Anthony Arnove, editor of "Iraq Under Seige," a new book about the impact of war and sanctions on Iraq

-Mellisa Thornton, organizer with Planned Parenthood, NYC

-Paul D'Amato,leading member of the Internatiotional Socialist Organization and editor of the International Socialist Review.

The conference will also include a number of workshops on key topics for activists: "Was it right to vote for Nader?" "Palestininan Liberation after the collapse of the peace process" "Globalization and cross-border solidarity" "Police, Prisons and the Death Penalty" "Abortion Rights under attack" "Recession and class struggle" and more.

Tickets are 5 bucks and registration starts at 10:30am Conference runs from 11am - 6pm with party to follow
