CORRECTION: "The first Asian-American member of a US cabinet, Mineta is currently commerce secretary in the outgoing administration of Bill Clinton. He has been named by Bush to become transportation secretary."

So it was his parting shot in that position - I can't find who Bush picked to replace him at Commerce (a choice global moneybags position).

More biog: (from AFP):

"Former congressman Mineta's appointment last July as commerce secretary capped a fairy-tale rise from a childhood spent partly in a World War II internment camp for Japanese Americans."

"He later served in the US Army in Korea and Japan and went to college before entering politics, eventually becoming mayor of San Jose, California."

"Mineta served 11 terms as a member of the House of Representatives for California, before leaving in 1995 to take up a vice-presidency at aviation giant Lockheed Martin Corp."

Note: Lockheed has a big facility in S.V. (near Moffit Field)

Well, I'm almost up to my quota for today... /***********************************************************************

"Sure I was young and impulsive once--I wore every conceivable pin.

Even went to Socialist meetings and learned all those old union hymns.

Ah, but I've grown older and wiser, and that's why I'm turning you in. So Love Me, Love Me, Love Me--I'm A Liberal."
