i thought it was just me, but yeah, i see some backlash going on here, something the brave new world/economy rah rah never considered when they said the Internet would break down all those artificial social categories like race, gender, age. back when they were in heavy talks about what was then frequently called "The Information Superhighway", my mentor tried to get me to dump my diss plans for studying the local public convos about how to make the net accessible. i did some fieldwork before i put my foot down and said "no, i'm not going in that direction..." so much rah rah back then about how no one would know who anyone else was, yadda.... my reaction then was, "and why exactly is that a good thing? they will just presume everyone else is like them --male, white, 25 (with a 12 incher!)." one of the more absurd, least thought out claims..

oh and thought you'd enjoy this, somewhat related.
