PRESS RELEASE THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE DAVOS-PORTO ALEGRE 28 January 2001 7- 9 PM

THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE is a special international television programme which will create a satellite television bridge between Davos and distinguished panelists in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where thousands have gathered to express their views about globalization. Rather than letting the gap get wider, participants in both Davos and Porto Alegre have an opportunity to engage in a direct dialogue that could help shape the course of events in the coming decades. The programme will address the following topics :

THE ISSUES How can the divides be bridged : between haves and have-nots, creation of wealth and preservation of environment, labor and management? THE FEARS Is globalization erasing local cultures and stealing autonomy from sovereign states? Traditions from the planet? Will slowing down global integration lead to stagnant and recessionary economies worldwide? THE CHALLENGES Can the two side hear one another? Can a new code of ethics for business be formulated that both sides can accept?

We have invited a small number of participants from the two Forums who are uniquely suited to the challenge of this unprecedented discussion.

In Switzerland:

George Soros (Open Society Institute) Marc Malloch-Brown (UNDP) Pierre Sané (Amnesty International) John Ruggie (Chief Advisor to UN Secretary General) Jeffrey Sachs (Harvard Institute of Int'l. Development John Edlund (ABB)

In Brazil :

Bernard Cassen (president of ATTAC) Walden Bello (Focus on Global South) Eduardo Galeano (Writer) Fred Azcarate (Jobs With Justice) Aminata Traoré, former Minister of Culture of Mali Joao Pedro Stedile (Landless Workers Movement)

Additional guests are expected to come and intervene in this debate.

The independent programme will be produced by the journalist Patrice Barrat, for broadcast on the European satellite channel ARTE ; the US satellite channel WorldlinkTV in the US ; as well as Australian, Swiss, South African and Brazilian channels. The programme is a production of Article Z in association with Internews Interactive and Alter Doc.
