Fernando Oritz, perhaps Cuba's best-known anthropologist in the old days,
wrote a book called Sugar and Tobacco: Cuban Counterpoint. He introduced
the concept of "transculturaion" to discuss the primary, secondary, etc.,
influences of the one sector on the other. I like the concept. It helps in
any discussion of multiculturalism to have a method whereby one can study
the effects of one culture on another and vice versa.
