Polish, from a Catholic liberal arts college (philsophy depts at state colleges were dismantled after the March 1968 student revolt). Wrote thesis about modes of cognition in Spinoza. But my defection to the US prompted my defection to sociology, partly as a result of the encountered attutudes exemplified by the following exchange:
Sponsoring organization's rep: "What is your occupation?" Me: "I have a degree in philosophy." Sponsoring organization's rep (after a long pause): "But what can you actually do?"
