JUST POLITICS
In a poll conducted by Zogby International and E Vote, less than half of the voters that supported Al Gore in 2000 have a favorable opinion of a Gore run in 2004. The showed that only 48% of Gore voters would support Al Gore in 2004. Interestingly, only among voters under 25, however, does Gore get high marks: 56% have a favorable opinion, which drops to under 30% for every other age group. Gore also does far better with those who have less than a high school education. But no other leading Democratic candidate did any better - in fact, all other candidates polled at 10% and below, including Senator Joseph Lieberman, Al Gore's running mate in 2000. The poll also showed some interesting strengths for a possible run by Dick Gephardt, the current House Minority Leader. Gephardt easily out-distanced Joe Lieberman and garnered the second-highest amount of support among voters that swung to Ralph Nader and the Green Party in 2000. This is a key group for Democrats in 2004. In addition, Gephardt also had a strong lead over Lieberman among self-described liberals - a core Democratic Party group, and one essential to winning early primary victories in 2004 to secure the Democratic nomination. And Gephardt also edged out Lieberman among independent voters - another key group needed in both the primary and general election campaigns.
