In fact Marx' only direct descendants are from his relationship with Helene Demuth (whose name, ironically, means "humility"). It's interesting to read the history of the Marx family. They lived quite bourgeois lives to the extent their means allowed. In fact, some of the financial stringency they experienced came out of spending their money on things that served to keep up middle-class appearances and find proper husbands for the daughters. Somewhere in the correspondence Marx says something about how it wouldn't do to adopt a proletarian lifestyle. Our notions of the leftist intellectual with a bohemian approach to personal life came later. Only Eleanor, the youngest daughter lived long enough to get into something like that. You can see in terms of personal life how, at the time, the workers' movement was an offshoot of the bourgeois democratic movement. Christopher Rhoades Dÿkema
