Exploitation ofa academics (was reparations)

I've heard the same first hand. When I apply for jobs outside of the academy, orgs are *very* skeptical, if not downright condescending. Second hand, I've friends tell me that they finally had to leave their Ph.D's off of their resumes (and lie) or really de-emphasize them to get interviews and jobs.
