According to me, because I was a red. More richly, they hired me to replace a guy who taught Russian philosophy and Marxism (Jim Scanlan, a fine scholar, but no Marxist or even socialist); and then (a) discovered that theyt didn't want someone was really was a radical doing radical-type things, and (b) besides, communism fell,so who cares about that stuff anymore? I also teed off a couple of the department's right wingers, who made a fuss about my being there.
According to them, I was no damn good, despite having published, when I was canned, five articles in top-line mainstream refereed philosophy journals (95% rejection rate), at least one of which had, at that time, drawn a response in the form of another article solely devoted to it; and despite the fact that two of the "under submission" articles they had on their table were accepted, immediately afterward (I mean, the next month), at similar journals; in the case of two of these journals, my pieces were about the only writings on Marx those journals had published in a decade. "We make our own evaluations," they said. I was also fired before tenure, structure speaking, so they didn't send letters out to get outside evaluations of my work.
