On the Democratic side [in the new Senate], the emerging powerbrokers include Joe Lieberman, who has recovered from his vice-presidential defeat to reclaim his Senate role as a coalition-builder on such issues as education and Mr Bush's faith-based initiative. In a move that drew double-takes among Capitol Hill watchers, Mr Lieberman this week teamed up with Rick Santorum, a Republican senator better known for being a footsoldier in the conservative revolution of Newt Gingrich.
The two, Mr Lieberman a Jew and Mr Santorum a devout Catholic, are offering legislation containing the tax components of Mr Bush's faith-based policies.
