Methink the driving force behind European "efficiency" i.e. small size of their cars vis a vis American monstrosities is not price but space restrictions - driving SUCs (sports utility cars) in Amsterdam or London would be utter insanity.

US gov't in cahoots with auto manufacturers and oil companies "overcame" this problem by destroying cities and building car-friendly suburbs. That might work in this pettite bourgeois hellhole aka USA because most country bumpkins who populate this land never experienced benefits of urbanization - but in Western Europe such a proposal would be dead before the ink would dry on it.
