Actually, I wonder if that derives from earlier marriages in such states or just the propensity to marry rather than live together? In more secular states, people may live together more often at earlier ages and therefore avoid formal divorces. In more secular states, they may be more likely to marry only when they are pretty sure it is going to work out in the longer term.
