Here's what Katha Pollitt has to say about the Andrew Sullivan controversy.

Doug

----

Andrew sullivan is a charming and egregious self-promoter who has put his private life into print in self-serving and self-seeking and apparently not very honest ways (isn't he always going on about how he wants to get married? sure). He has to expect people will be interested in gossip about him. (That business about how as a mini-celeb he found it hard to pick up guys is priceless. Most people would say fame helps you get laid--and if he's so famous, how come he needs to tell people he's HIV-pos? Being HIV-pos is mostly what he's famous FOR. this is all spin, intended to dissociate himself from typical users of sexual websites.) He loves Matt Drudge, so who is he to complain about "sexual mcCarthyism"? Just this past sunday Andrew went on and on in London times about clinton's 'sexual recklessness' and supposed psychological problems--about the thousandth piece he's written along these lines. he certainly didn't think Pres C or monica had a right to privacy! One thing you can say for old Bill, he didn't give Monica any fatal diseases, and he didn't troll for sex partners by filling out questionnaires on the internet!

Andrew is always going on about how sick gay culture is, how gays should be squares, live in suburbs, get married. Sure, fine, okay, but now it turns out he's as "promiscuous," as "depersonalizing," as into "meaningless," "mechanical" sex and clone culture as any of the people he criticizes! That is a news story. He is a HYPOCRITE. It's like dubya doing cocaine and leading the war on drugs, or anti-choice pundits paying for their girlfriends' abortions.

Finally, I think anyone who is a practicing Catholic, anti-choice AND pro-welfare reform deserves to have their sexual peccadilloes widely known. The hedonism he has belatedly decided is all right for himself is not an activity he would make possible for women. Where's women's right to privacy in his scheme of things? In the back alley or the obstetrics ward. The heck with him I say -- what goes around comes around.

Katha
