in an interview, spivak has snidely and explicitly rejected the use of subaltern by US college students to describe themselves, no matter what their identity or level of impoverishment. do you think she would agree to its use with reference to mexican lesbian grocery clerks who live in the US?
i don't know, myself, and i'm not familiar with anything she's written in order to extend that claim further to speculate to this usage here.
