cultural imperialism

If it's any consolation, one of the results on the pop culture level of growth of anti-Western and nationalist sentiment in Russia is that Things Western Are Not Cool. The airwaves are clogged with pop and rock bands from the FSU, many of whom are damn good. I had no idea Moldovans could rock so hard. (I remember having to explain to a group of astounded teenagers that Zemfira is not popular in the US. "What! Everybody likes Zemfira! Americans Are Not Cool.")

Cinema is still mostly Western, but that's because feature films cost moolah. One Russian film people might want to check out is 1998's "Thr Iron Heel of the Oligarchy," about factory workers in Siberia losing their jobs.

Wierdness of pop culture transmission: In the late USSR, there was one Western pop band that achieved absolutely unquestioned rock-god status: Depeche Mode. It was the Beatles all over again. Everybody started dressing like Martin Gore. There is in fact a club in Tallinn called Depeche Mode. All Depeche Mode, all the time!

Doug says he is concerned that anti-Americanism is the anti-imperialism of fools, just as anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools. The problem that Doug raises is a real one, but the cultural solution that Doug seems to prefer -- a renewed appreciation of "American culture," especially American pop & sub cultures -- won't do. What we need here is patient political education, with emphasis on the complex history of capitalism and imperialism.
