Lipstick sales have increased since Sept.11 in a further sign that the economy is in trouble. The chairman of Estee Lauder Cos., Leonard Lauder, said: "When lipstick sales go up, people don't want to buy dresses." The reason is that many women see lipstick as a small luxury item which they can still indulge in after cutting back on other expenditure. Lauder's Leading Lipstick Index, which tracks sales of all the company's brands, is broadly up since Sept.11.
