To what extent has feminism (various definitions) ever enjoyed majority support among women in the U.S.? Haven't many women in the U.S. felt (and don't many still feel) that feminism is an attack on _their_ identity?

I _know_ that many opposed the label. In the '80s and '90s I got innumerable papers from women students containing the phrase, "I'm not a feminist, but..." Some of those using this phrase were reacting _only_ to the label, and were clearly feminists in substance, but . . . .?
