The late Mike Spann's father quotes him as having said, "Somebody has got to do the things that no one else wants to do."

As a member of the CIA he was a loyal American, his father said.

So far this is undoubtedly true as a necessary part of the exercise of power by any state. A state has to have recourse to secret and violent methods.

War is violent and atrocities occur.

But the right of the US to act as policeman to the emerging Empire is under attack because of a more detailed report from a (London) Times reporter Oliver August:

Mike Spann was apparently the trigger for the massacre by Alliance forces of all the prisoners of war in the fortress in Mazar e Sharif.

The folly and arrogance of his action, but more importantly the disproportionate massacre of absolutely all the prisoners including by US and British forces, without any opportunity for some of the prisoners to surrender and be disarmed, - was that a "thing that no one else wanted to do"? Or did they enjoy it? No doubt yes they did.

This episode will damage the credibility of the USA with their British sidekicks as the legitimate Enforcer of the powers of Empire.

Anti-war groups have called for an inquiry.
