World Bank says terror attacks condemn 10 million to poverty

The World Bank says the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States will plunge another 10 million people into poverty next year as developing countries' economies take a battering.

World Bank President James Wolfensohn, says as well as the human toll from the attacks themselves, the largely unseen human toll will be felt in all parts of the developing world, especially Africa.

He says it's estimated that tens of thousands of children will die worldwide and another 10 million people are likely to be living below the poverty line of one dollar a day because of the terrorist attacks.

He says the World Bank's preliminary economic assessment is based only on expected loss of income.

He says many more people will be thrown into poverty if development strategies are disrupted.
