Terrorists can strike anywhere and at anytime. Disaster can strike anytime. Why does it take a disaster like this for there to be an urgency about improving security procedures!? Two years ago on my way back from doing some Black Hills jewelry shows in NC I stopped at Ft Gordon to pick up a few things at the PX. That was then and this is now. I don't think that is now possible. What about my access to the Veterans Administration Hospital? There is already a VA police but they're never around when you think they should be. Perhaps they'll start to check everyone's identification now at the door? The VA is also a high profile target. We can certainly get paranoid about all this.
The last terrorists I remember hearing about in the military were skin heads and members of the Klan. Are they largely inconsequential compared to the type of terrorist threat which we are now faced with? Tell it to Charles Scott, who is an Aryan Nations leader in northern British Columbia who is preparing for civil war. He is building a private, armed, national militia, dubbed the Patriot Training Network (PTN), and has 50 followers right now who are ready to fight the "Communist, Zionist, anti-Christ government" in Ottawa, Canada.
It is claimed that some of these terrorists have been trained in the military. And all our military bases are very high profile targets. Pulling guard duty won't any longer be an seemingly useless exercise. The military will undoubtedly beef up it's training and ability to protect submarines in port and the parimeter around military bases. The Navy will be more aware of attacks from the water and sailors will be on alert for suspicious activity around military hardware. The Navy is acquiring racing style boats to escort Navy ships in and out of a harbor. The Air Force at Eglin Air Base took over 6 miles of A1A and closed it up tight after the attack in NY and still hasn't opened it up to civilian traffic. They may have to build a permanent detour around the coastal route in Florida away from military installations? Paranoia?
At Camp Pendleton there is 21 miles of coastline and a mountain range and they have asked Congress for another $9 million for security equipment to guard that coastline.
The bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, Okla., which killed over 150 people, was linked by the authorities in the U.S. to America's militia movement and McVeigh was a veteran. These are our terrorists.
Gun control won't stop terrorists from making bombs as Timothy did with an explosive mixture of diesel fuel and chemical fertilizer. The attack on the Twin Towers by Muslim extremists had nothing to do with guns; they used mat knives.
Terrorists might be anyone with a distrust of the government. These far-right nuts don't need much to set them off, from abortion rights to gun control.
In the U.S. where talk of monitoring the right-wing extremists usually turns to spying on the Left (is it too late to mention Cointelpro?) and anyone who opposes the government on the basis of justice issues - or rather the lack of justice in our political system which is systemically flawed as a system of oppression. The cops insure that there is peaceful subservience to the corporate power structure.
There is a real disagreement over terrorism between Israelis and Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority which can't seem to enforce it's authority over anyone and is often involved itself in "terrorist" attacks on Israel accuses the Israelis of "state sponsored terrorism" against Palestinians. Each side is killing each other and each killing breeds more "terrorists".
The Israelis demand the arrest of Palestinians and the Palestinians respond with demands of their own to arrest Israeli militants. It is a constant escalating war of words and violence.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon accuses the Palestinian Authority of "heading and directing a coalition of terrorist organizations." Usama bin Laden said, every American was a target, whether military or civilian. Marwan Barghouti, a leader of Yasser Arafat's Fatah party, who was almost killed by an Israeli missile attack said that nowhere in Israel would be safe from attack "as long as Israel doesn't respect Palestinian sovereignty over their territories." President Bush accuses bin Ladin of terrorism for practically the same words that were uttered by Marwan Barghouti. And Israel says it will go right on targeting (suspected) terrorists for assassination. It would seem that those threats coming from the Israelis are also threats of "state terrorism".
HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION: What if the F.B.I. learned that Mexico was "harboring" 20 Timothy VcVeighs. Would the U.S. hold Mexico liable and target Mexico for harboring terrorists as it says it is with Afghanistan?
