FYI, *my* immediate neighbor out here includes an airline pilot (at least he's one so long as the bailout works) who is also a master builder (he's adding a wing to his house virtually single-handedly) and who was a finalist in the Van Cliburn amateur pianist competition -- an impressive roster of achievements for which he will be featured on an upcoming segment of PBS-TV's "Egg" arts show. At the same time, my neighbors do *not* include George Stephanopolous, another big plus.

That said, your overall point about LI as a cultural wasteland is well taken, and my wife is heartily sick of my comments about the nincompoopery hereabouts.

Be assured, though, when the national recovery takes place and I am gainfully employed again, I will proudly join the commuter throng on the LIRR once more and stand united with you Manhattanites in the Renaissance Festival that is NYC, scanning the horizon for incoming bogeys.
