Sorry Chip - you're exactly wrong, believe it or not! They may not actually have Osama mousepads for sale, but they are serious (notwithstanding the fact that a smidgen of it is misplaced adolescent angst), and the Burzum guy really has spent time in the slammer for torching churches. They do despise jews and christians. It's a crazy hybrid:

"This page brought to you by pure hatred for: The U.S. Drug War, The U.S. Alliance with Israel, The U.S. Drug and Weapons Sales Team, Israel, The United Nations, The New World Order of Prescott and George and George W. Bush, anything Clinton or Gore ever touched, Liebermann, Christ, liberals, humanists, hippies and other secular Christians worldwide. Die!"

Check out their musical/political "philosophy" page at:

http://www.hessian.org/metal/politics.html

...where they explain their interest in "the ancients," eugenics, women's equality, anti-authoritarianism, ethnic nationalism, socialism (anti-capitalism), meritocracy, etc.

And as the black metal FAQ says,

"1.2.3 fascism

The relationship between black metal and fascism is not a necessary one, but a frequent correlation between the extreme movements is observed circumstance. Naturally any underground death-related movement will eventually find some identification in the mystical reality transformation surrounding Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist movement in Germany during the early 1940s.

As it stands now, it is fair to say that a large percentage of black metal's founders and practicioners identify themselves as having National Socialist or racialist leanings, and that most of those who innovated the genre with death held such viewpoints. Simultaneously however it is worthy to mention that these individuals share an interpretation of the relationship between Satanism, nihilism, fascism and Odhinism; they see the fascist mentality as approaching the "warrior morality" Nietzsche writes of or a spiritual coexistence with nature.

Many also have identified, as a result of Satanist or Odhinist spiritual leanings, with the rebellion against Judeo-Christianity that claims Europe should be free from the "Semitic" influences of Judaism, Jews, Christianity and Christians. In one way or another, most black metal fans have found something in fascism with which they identify, even if they do not accept the whole.

Before the cry of un-P.C. terror goes up, let us not forget that metal is a post-moral genre and so has no qualms about the methods of the Nazis, only questions about the ultimate effectiveness. There are also many who appreciate the Nazis but as a scientific preference would have used other methods for similar but not exact goals.

"And if we ask who was responsible for our misfortune, then we must inquire who profited by our collapse. And the answer to that question is the "Banks and Stock Exchanges are more flourishing than ever before." We are not fighting Jewish or Christian capitalism, we are fighting every capitalism: we are making the people completely free." - Adolph Hitler, offergruppenfuhrer at reichstag.de

1.2.4 christianity

Metal and Christianity are in direct opposition; metal is the lawless, romantic, free and spiritually personal existence that Christianity fights with a material God ensconced in a symbol so absolute that any chaos or chance can be attributed to him..."

Etc., ad infinitum. Ah well - you get the idea. As I said, a good deal of it is misplaced adolescent and post-adolescent venom, but the burning churches pictured on the site are not just window dressing, and obviously there are tie-ins with grassroots political entities. As a last item, check out this sprawling essay on social morality (where they namecheck Levi Strauss, Joseph Singer...) at:

http://www.fuckchrist.com/txt/proof.html

The "death to israel" mailing list solicitation kelley highlighted is genuine, not a spoof (not that that amounts to much).

I'd like to hear what Justin, Luke or Ken have to say about the philosophical/religious meanderings on the above page, but I'd hardly wish the effort on anyone as there are more pressing things at the moment.

(And sorry for the bandwidth.)
