THe New Labour Government seems actually to be enjoying the fall of Railtrack, one of the companies into which British Rail was privatised. This may be a turning point in perceptions about privatisation.

So much so that British Finance Capital is signalling that the government may make it far more difficult for itself to raise funds in the future.

Despite having an official who embarrassingly sent an e-mail shortly after the WTC attack saying this was a good time to bury bad stories, unapologetically ...

>Byers Says End Of Railtrack Is 'Golden Opportunity'

>Stephen Byers says the collapse of Railtrack provides a golden opportunity
>to rebuild the UK's rail network.
>
>Mr Byers also said that Railtrack itself first suggested placing the
>company into administration.
>
>He also confirmed that Railtrack will be replaced by a non-profit making
>company.

>In a statement to the Commons, the Transport Secretary said that the
>Government could not continue to write a blank cheque to the company.

>He said Railtrack had asked the Government to cover all its costs, a
>profit and a four-year suspension of the regulatory system.
>
>He insisted the new company will be able to raise funds in the market and
>private sector funding would operate in partnership with the Government.
