Marketplace? O.K. But also 400 billion in military and intelligence on the part of the US alone.

Well, next about Doug's machismo--or is that chutpah? At first I was going to congratulate him for being allowed to use the mofo word in the Observer, but then I saw it wasn't the real Observer.

I used to say, From the safest of places, come the bravest of words (did I steal that from Orwell?). But it doesn't work this time. It could have been Doug stuck in the elevator that fateful day, investigating another book on international financial skullduggery (of course it could have been one of my relatives in NYC, too, or even an exchange student from my university here in Fukui staying in NJ, Japan doing sightseeing that day).

I also used to say, Heck, send in the NYC police if you want to get the job done right. As it turns out, they are just mis-deployed in the 'hood right now.

There is a point here though: right from the start some of us said, the most basic concern should have been public safety and security in the US before any threat was externalized. As Yoshie has said, 'incompetence'. Anthrax? The response so far has been, more motherfucking incompetence. Don't worry though, your special forces on their punitive expedition got their jags a couple weeks ago.
