"Civilian casualties ... however regrettable and however tragic ... have to be secondary to the primary goal of eliminating the enemy and doing it with with whatever methods are necessary to achieve it." -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), CBS News interview, 10/28/01

Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican, said in a CBS interview that issues such as Ramadan and civilian casualties must be secondary to the goal of destroying the enemy.

"The immediate problem needs to be addressed with all the might of the United States military power and issues such as Ramadan or civilian casualties, however regrettable and however tragic, and other issues have to be secondary to the primary goal of eliminating the enemy and doing it with whatever methods are necessary to achieve it," Mr. McCain said.
