I think there is a general misperception about ObL's motives for hating the
Saud clan. Squeezing the Sauds for protection is an old game in the Middle
East. Iraq did it, Syria did it, the PLO did it, and now the Taliban are
doing it. When ObL offered to defend Saudi against Iraq with his Afghanis,
he was just playing this game. Fahd would of course never have an Arab army
actually capable of fighting on his soil out of fear for his fragile throne,
which ObL almost certainly intended to grab if allowed to organize a
fighting force. There's a popular fundamentalist opposition in Saudi that
would give ObL all the street support he needed. So Fahd kicked the would-be
coup leader out and that's why ObL got hopping mad. The infidels on hallowed
ground part is just window dressing.
