Just because people support more governement programs does not mean that they don't think that the government is wasting their money on stuff it is spent on currently. Or are you in favor of a few more B-2 bombers?

My point (which I can see now I didn't make too well - I guess I have a tendency to do that...) was that, whether people think spending should increase, decrease, or stay the same, most people are in the grip of fiscal orthodoxy that says deficits are bad. The idea that they are not only not bad, but nessessary, seems contrary to common sense. For most people it's like being told that the only way they'll loos wieght is eat more and stop exerciseing.
