I defer to Ted's superior knowledge on the invisible hand thread, with the caveat that the more one emphasizes the centrality and coherence of the concept, the less can one credit Smith's otherwise acute vignettes. Or would it be the other way 'round? Could it be that Smith, following his own natural inclination to confound means and ends, confounded his eloquence with an Idea and that the end, his invisible hand, amounts to no more of a intellectual conveniency than a tweezer-case?
