The "Yezhovshchina" is the name Soviets gave to the purges of the terrible year 1937, when Yezhov, who was called "that murderous dwarf"--I don't think he was actually a biological dwarf, but he was very small--wah head of the Cheka. His fall, arrest, and execution signaled the end of that particular nightmare, and, altghough it is hard to believe now--his replacement by Beria was viewed as an improvement, and Beria himself as "liberal."
