I don't know if this is getting through, so I am sending it again, a bit by
a bit. We are all safe. Shannon and Sherraine are in school in Brooklyn .
However, Winsome, Sandia and I get caught in the middle of it. We were
taking Sandia to the doctor for an ear infection and an asthma attack, and
as we are going into the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Sandia says look at all
that smoke. Winsome says, "I see some flames." About a third of the way
through the tunnel, we hear on the radio that a plane has hit the World
Trade Center. Traffic slows almost to a stop; not surprising, since the
Tunnel exits right at the foot of the WTO. Two-thirds of the way, the guy
on the radio says that a second plane hit, and right away we knew something
was up. When we finally get out of the tunnel, I make our way to the
eastern part of the island as quickly as I can. About ten blocks away from
the WTC, we hear a noise, and see people start running. I think oh no, a
third plane. A huge cloud of dust appears in back of us, and billows down
the road as people run like crazy. It surrounds the car, and it is
impossible to see. The dust is falling like volcanic ash, for four or five
minutes we are driving with no visibility. Winsome and Sandia started to
panic, but I managed to get them to stay in the card, where at least you
could breathe. Slowly, it cleared, and we made our way uptown. We are now
at the UFT offices; I parked the car on the street by the doctor's, since
we can't get out of Manhattan, and there is no point in clogging the roads.
Sandia, who is sleeping on the floor next to me, and Winsome were quite
traumatized; I am too numb to know how I feel -- just grateful at this
point that I managed to keep my head, and that we all are safe.
I don't know how to process this -- thousands of people dead no doubt. I
remember seeing ambulances and fire trucks rush by us in the tunnel, and
wonder how many are dead now...
.
