Horror and indignation... There are no other words to describe the violent attacks which have just struck New York and Washington. No cause can ever justify such a monstrous act, aimed at making as many civilian victims as possible. Now we have to understand why there is such denial of the motives behind the attacks. George Bush's military cheerleading can not, in this regard, make the world forget the responsibility of the great powers, and the American empire particularly, for unleashing the violence which has put the planet permanently on the edge of the abyss. To guarantee unlimited power for a handful of industrial and financial giants, these powers have never hesitated to destroy Third World economies, to support the worst dictatorships while they incited coups d'etat themselves, to hit with embargoes those countries they have taken upon themselves to label "outlaws", even to bomb them when it suits them. Neo-liberal globalization has thrown entire regions into total chaos. They have happily financed and armed pawns, made over for the moment as "freedom fighters". And since it came to office, the new American administration has made a point of opposing any treaty which might impede its hegemonic freedom to act -- even opposing ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
No one knows, so far, who is behind the murderous actions of September 11. But it is not unlikely that a Frankenstein's monster may have turned against its creator, using that creator's own weapons against it: blind cynicism, brutal force, sophisticated military technology and financial power. How, for example, can we ignore the fact that Saudi billionaire Bin Laden, toward whom so many accusing fingers are pointing, would never have found himself leading a terrorist multinational without inital help from the CIA?
This must move us to vigilance, that no one can begin taking advantage of the mood created today, to direct public outrage against the Muslim world, the Palestinians or Arab peoples. Not to mention immigrant peoples, the designated targets of the Vigipirate plan, [French public security "anti-terrorist" crackdown during the Gulf War and other crises - trans.] which has just been reactivated

Horreur et indignation... Il n’est pas d’autres mots pour qualifier les attentats qui viennent de frapper New York et Washington. Aucune cause ne justifiera jamais pareil acte monstrueux, visant à faire le maximum de victimes civiles. Reste maintenant à comprendre pourquoi une telle négation de la raisons. Les rodomontades guerrières de George Bush ne sauraient, à cet égard, faire oublier la responsabilité des grandes puissances, et singulièrement de l’empire américain, dans le déchaînement de violence qui met en permanence la planète au bord de l’abîme. Pour assurer le pouvoir sans partage d’une poignée de géants industriels et financiers, ils n’ont jamais hésité à détruire les économies du tiers monde, à soutenir les pires dictatures lorsqu’ils ne fomentaient pas eux-mêmes des coups d’Etat, à frapper d’embargo les pays qu’ils s’autorisent à désigner comme «voyous», voire à les bombarder lorsque bon leur semble. La mondialisation néolibérale a jeté des régions entières dans le plus complet chaos. On y a allègrement financé et armé des hommes de mains, pour l’occasion transformés en "combattants de la liberté". Et depuis son arrivée aux affaires, la nouvelle administration américaine s’est même fait un devoir de s’opposer à tout traité pouvant faire obstacle à sa volonté hégémonique. Jusqu’à la ratification de la Convention internationale de protection de l’enfance... Nul ne sait, à cette heure, qui est à l’origine des opérations meurtrières de ce 11 septembre. Mais il n’est pas invraisemblable qu’un Frankenstein se soit retourné contre son créateur, utilisant contre ce dernier ses propres armes, celles du cynisme aveugle, de la force brutale, d’une technicité militaire sophistiquée et de la puissance financière. Comment par exemple ignorer que le milliardaire saoudien Ben Laden, vers lequel tant de doigts accusateurs se tournent, ne se serait jamais retrouvé à la tête de sa multinationale terroriste sans l’aide initiale de la CIA? Voilà qui doit nous inciter à la vigilance lorsque d’aucuns commencent à profiter du climat aujourd’hui créé pour désigner à la vindicte publique le monde musulman, les Palestiniens ou les peuples arabes. Sans parler des populations immigrées, victimes toutes désignées du plan "Vigipirate" qui vient d’être réactivé...
