A senior Pentagon source tells Fox News he has been lobbied by staff members for Senators Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., to support a public call for CIA Director George Tenet to resign.
The source said that Sen. Shelby, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has also been working on Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., who is supposedly undecided. Graham is the Chairman of Select Committee on Intelligence.
The source said Shelby and others critical of Director Tenet view the bombings on Tuesday as prima facie evidence of a massive intelligence failure, one brought on by Tenet's proud embrace of a restriction on CIA's ability to recruit foreign agents with criminal backgrounds. This restriction will likely be another casualty of this episode, the source says.
However, a key staffer in Sen. Thompson's office says that though Thompson, also a member of the Select Committee, is not known as "a Tenet fan," he has not heard of Thompson moving against Tenet in any way at this time. No one from Sen. Shelby's office could be reached for comment.
