as does a bizarre calculus of human lives and deaths, if you ask me. it's why you haven't seen me lobbing numbers into this debate. figures are important kinds of facts, but going back and forth about them in this context will not get us very far, and this sort of actuarial approach to social justice doesn't do much for me.
